The 2017 National Meet Is Officially In The Books!

Well that was quite a good night!

Around 50 to 60 UK Seahawkers- including members who reside in Seattle and Florida- congregated in Nottingham for a night of meeting new people, old friends and raising an immense amount of money for the two designated Chapter Charities for 2017.

The event took place at Canalhouse Bar in the centre of the city.

Those present included people from all over the UK. From Scotland, to the south coast of England and from over the water and one of our Irish Seahawkers too. As well as that most commendably we had a foursome who had made the trip over the Atlantic.

Dannette and Mark making the trip from the Emerald City as part of the UK Membership number. They brought so many donated items for the 2017 Charity Auction. They were also joined by Craig and Theresa who made the journey- via Seattle- from Orlando, Florida.

To begin the night off, some attendees arrived early to take in the 2017 FA Cup Final. For that Group Admin Andy Robinson ran a sweepstake. With both prizes happening to be won by Bob Alexander.

We were joined this year by WeeHawk. For those who don’t know WeeHawk is a figure who has the moves some covet on the dancefloor and is a focal point of a lot of social media buzz himself from all over the world. He was sent from his guardian’s- Chris Johnson- side on a UK tour. After stops in Manchester, Liverpool, the Lake District, Ireland and Scotland .He took in the meet and was the centre of attention perched near our new Chapter Banner.

Then, after all of that had ended we took a moment to remember Seahdawks Hall of Famer Cortez Kennedy. Midlands Rep Stuart Court leading the group in a 96-second applause in appreciation and memory of the man who saw his #96 retired after a decade of great play and destruction to opposing teams. RIP Cortez!

Then was the raffle and auction. All proceeds from the tickets purchased going towards our two charities. Items included Gameday programs, Seahawks Yearbooks, Rubber Ducks emblazoned in Seahawks colours and much more.

The bigger ticket items were reserved for the Charity Auction. Below is the items listed and the people who outbid the rest to take them home.

A Joey Galloway signed Football*: Sean Wilson (Chapter President)

An Authentic Gameday Seahawks Wolf Grey Jersey: Mark Jackson (Northern Rep)

A hand-crafted, limited edition ‘Sea Brick’**:  Cameron Welsh

A Superbowl 48 DVD***: Andy Robinson (2.0)

An Authentic Superbowl 48 seat cushion****: Andy Robinson 1.0

A Seahawks logo flag****: Scott Whitelaw

A Game Worn, Throwback Seahawks Helmet*****: Terry Peppard (Northern Rep)

Original, one-off print design^ Mark Jackson

*Donated by Chris Johnson; **Donated and made by Lenny Sap; ***Donated by Andy Pilkington-Steele; **** Donated by Craig Godwin; *****Donated by Melanie Hardman;^ Designed by Gordon Currie

A massive well done and thank you to all those who placed a bid. Your money, with all money counted and considered for saw the night raise an immense figure of £1,240.

That figure will be split between our two 2017 Chapter Charities- Archie’s Smile and SSAFA. For more information on both, go to our Charities tab at the top of the page.

With that money raised, the night continued with stories shared, drinks consumed and a good few laughs.

A massive thanks to the staff at the Canalhouse Bar for dealing with us for so many hours (and pints). Also a huge thanks to all who donated to and those who purchased raffle tickets, took part in the FA Cup final sweeps and took the time out of their bank holiday weekend to come to town and join in the fun.

Thanks to Mark Jackson, Ross Bell and Gordon Currie for helping us sort the audio issues so the group could ‘dance’ to Macklemore, Soundgarden, The Verve and Sammy Hagar.

Finally a huge thanks to Andy Pilkington-Steele for taking the time out of his night and being the night’s paparazzi. Below are all the pictures from the night. Some more from those at the night are up on the FB page.

2017 Members Pick ‘Em Prize Confirmed!

With the off-season winding through, the chapter is pleased to confirm the prize- and signature- for the 2017 Members Pick ‘Em Competition.

Last year saw Ed Kenny win the Members competition and be awarded with a signed ball from Seahawks WR Jermaine Kearse.

For 2017 the prize will again be a signed ball. But this year’s signee is LUKE WILLSON!

The signed ball will go to the winner of the competition which will be set up and open to PAID MEMBERS ONLY. That will be sent out over the e-mail before the season begins.

If you want to be in the running for the 2017 Pick ‘Em competition and this great prize, then join the chapter and make the most of benefits such as this.

GO HAWKS!

2016 Members Pick ‘Em Winner Receives His Prize

At Season’s start we opened up our annual Members-only Pick ‘Em competition. The winner after a tiebreaker of all tiebreakers has now got his hands on the 2016 Pick ‘Em prize.

The winner was Ed Kenny. Ed, who lives in Cork went toe to toe with Sam England for most of the season. After 17 weeks, they were tied and had to go into a Playoff tiebreaker. That seemed set to also be a tie, until Tom Brady did Tom Brady things.

So Ed won out…eventually! Today he received the prize- a Jermaine Kearse signed ball- and sent over the pictures to prove it…

(CHECK OUT THAT MAN CAVE!)

Ed also sent along his ‘Seahawks Backstory’ :

“My support for the Seahawks started back in 2001 while working with Microsoft. Due to frequent trips over and back from Ireland to Seattle I was fortunate to attend a number of games in CenturyLink field. The UK Seahawkers Chapter has been a brilliant way to keep in touch with Seahawks fans on this side of the pond.”

“The benefits of the chapter are many (especially the opportunity to get on the field in CenturyLink during pregame). I was lucky to win the ‘pick ’em’ competition two years back when I received a ball signed by Cliff Avril from the late Ian Robert Smith.  The prize is superb.”

“Special thanks to Sean Wilson, Stuart Court and all of the UK Seahawkers. Go Hawks!”

Ed’s signed ball will now take it’s place in his very impressive man cave!

But to be in the running for the 2017 Pick ‘Em prize, it is all very easy. Become a member, join the league at the start of the season and then ask Ed for his picks.

Easy!

Massive Congrats to Ed on his win!

The 2017 Chapter’s Chosen Charities

Following a really strong year of fundraising in 2016. The committee is delighted to announce details of the 2017 Charities we will raise funds for this year.

The following is written by the Chapter’s secretary, Cedric Auchere:

“Hi 12’s,

This is one of the reasons why being part of a chapter is so much bigger than just watching some football at some ungodly hours in the middle of the night!

As many of you will be aware, Armed Forces related charities had always been special to Ian’s heart and his passing has but made this cause a special one in all of ours. So this year we will be raising money for the SSAFA – the Armed Forces Charity https://www.ssafa.org.uk/

This year, as well as SSAFA, the committee has unanimously agreed to back a charity run by one of our very own members; Dean Carless. I leave to him to introduce “Archie’s Smile” in his own words:

“Archie’s Smile was founded in 2014 to support young children with Down syndrome and their families. The charity was inspired by my son Archie Carless who was born in 2013 in Coventry. Following Archie’s birth we looked for a support group in the area, only to find that there wasn’t one. Rather than being discouraged we decided to create our own! Fast-forward three years and Archie’s Smile is a thriving charity which supports children from birth to the age of 5 who have Down syndrome from across the Midlands. We offer members weekly stay and play sessions, support and advice for parents, provide speech and language therapy for the children, organise day trips, and provide information packs for parents of newborns with Down syndrome via local hospitals.”

So we will be raising money for those great causes though 2017. Because that’s also what being a 12 is all about.”

So there you have it. Thanks to Dean for sharing the story of Archie’s Smile. Keep an eye on the website, Chapter Twitter (@SeahawkersUK) and other social media platforms for news and details on fundraising efforts for these two great causes!

One More 2017 Lifetime Membership

As we announced and awarded at last month’s AGM, the chapter gave out a few ‘Lifetime Memberships’ to people who have worked hard for the chapter in the past, are long-time members who have been omnipresent since the start and to honour and remember a gone but not forgotten friend.

Those who were presented on AGM night were Paula A’Bear, Chis A’Bear, Melanie Hardman and April Hardman on behalf of former President Ian Robert Smith.

There is one more amongst the 2017 crop though.

Pam Sheppard, alongside her late husband Michael set up the original UK Seahawkers fan group in the early 1980’s. They and son Gavin would send out newsletters to a small group of people in the early days of the NFL being a broadcasted sport in this country.

Last year saw Pam as the ‘guest of honour’ at the 2nd annual Birmingham/Midlands meet. Where the guys and girls there had the chance to meet Pam and show her what the group had become from those small chutes of the beginning she was a part of.

With the lifetime memberships decided, President Sean Wilson thought it fitting to award one of the initial memberships to ‘Momma UK Hawk’.

Her son Gavin has sent over the picture of Pam with her certified membership alongside a story of ‘many tears’ upon receiving the award earlier this week.

Massive thanks to Gavin for his help in getting it to his mum and obviously a thanks to Pam for all her work in the early days and her presence last September. This award is very much deserved!

Congrats and Go Hawks!
